The executive functions, learning skills and psychological resources learners need for academic success and personal well-being are rarely delineated or assessed in systematic ways. Learners’ needs are typically discovered only after they have fallen short in some manner.

The Self-Assessment Inventory is a self-report measure that helps schools or clinicians learn how prepared students are to meet the academic, personal, and social challenges they will encounter throughout their middle and high school years.

The purpose of the Self-Assessment Inventory is to delineate the day-to-day factors learners need in order to succeed and thrive in school, to obtain the learners' self-perception of them and to suggest practical strategies to increase them (listed in the manual).

The Self-Assessment Inventory conseptualizes components of success in 3 categories:

  • Competence (academic mastery)
  • Connections (relationships with peers and adults)
  • Coping (managing autonomy, emotions and stress) 

The learner's self-perceptions of the following essential academic and personal resources are thus reliably captured by the SAI.

The SAI can be used by school counsellors as part of advisory programme, as a screening tool for classes/grades for early identification of emerging problems or common concerns. as a tool for therapeutice relationship building or for research or programme evaluation.
